Computational and Statistical Methods for Corpus Analysis

APLNG 578

From this course, I have acquired knowledge of the core and advanced computational and statistical methods for analyzing corpus data. I have learned to use UNIX tools and python scripting for text processing as well as computational tools for querying and analyzing raw and linguistically annotated corpora. In addition, I have learned about statistical methods used in interpreting information extracted from text corpora.

For  the final project, I have examined the lexical richness of residential advertisements from two different websites, by using python, Standford POS Tagger and JMP.

Discourse Analysis

APLNG 581

In this course, I have learned various theories of spoken and written discourse, such as speech act theory. As well, this course introduces different approaches to analyze  the discourse.

For the final project, I have applied the comparative method to analyze Trump's victory speech after the South Carolina GOP primary by borrowing Hillary Clinton's Nevada caucuses victory speech. Both of speeches were delivered on the same day. This paper mainly focuses on the analysis of word choice in Trump's speech and the analysis of Trump's stance and self-representations indicated by his words.
